One of the most recent conquests I have been working on is being Lead Animator on a feature documentary. Now you may be saying “Lead Animator…. On a documentary?”

I’ll be constructing animation sequences for narration parts of the film. It’s a good way to provide context to the film and to illustrate key points and data needed to increase comprehension and understanding of the point of the film.

Onto the technical. I’m more of a visual effects guy then an animator. So I used this to my advantage. I made use of the puppet tool in Adobe After Effects CS5. The puppet tool, in short, assigns points to an image to be “puppeted”, or manipulated. In this way you can create some very simple, and actually pretty cool, animations. From there on it just works like good old fashioned key-framed animation.
